Dance like everyone is watching

On the eve of my birthday, the eldest kidling and I went out for dinner. We chose Tajine Alami, a Moroccan restaurant in Manitou Springs (Colorado), because my belly dance teacher dances there and I wanted to see her in action. And because we wanted to try something entirely new. We absolutely got something new.

When you arrive, you are asked to take off your shoes*. I knew this ahead of time by visiting the web site, which led to a text to my son:

“Wear clean, matching socks.”

You are then led into the dining area, a series of rooms with tables and cushions lining the walls. The better to relax and watch dancing, my dear child. Because I wanted to be semi-respectful of others, I only took a few shots of the place.

After your order is taken and before your food begins to arrive, they bring out warm water for you to wash your hands in. This is because you eat with your hands**.

We ordered a delicious lamb soup.

And then some other yummy food that I have no idea how to name but it was, well, yummy***.

My friends from work/school came and we had a blast talking and watching our (we’re in class together) teacher dance. Without further ado, the very beautiful, talented Alicia Cover of Alicia’s Zills of Fury (and my pictures do not even begin to capture the beauty of her dance – low light and fast moving dancer don’t go well together if you don’t wish to use flash – excuses, excuses):

Now, the following photos really ARE of me. And no, you can’t really see that I’m doing anything. My son, well, he’s super uber smart and funny and works hard, but alas, he is not exactly good with the camera. So, as I said, this really is me and I really did get up and dance, and should thy firstborn ever actually finally upload the video where you CAN see me, I’ll share that. Until then…

It was a wonderful night. I recommend by the restaurant and the entertainment. And if you’d like to learn belly dancing, check out Alicia’s web site for more information. She’s fun, funny, and oh so patient.

*You are asked but not required.
**You can request silverware if you really don’t wish to eat with your hands.
***Because you eat with your hands, I really didn’t take pictures of my actual food because I already had food on my hands.

Sounds like something our Missy would have said. It was her unspoken philosophy at least.
