You can do it! It took me 10 years to get my bachelor degree. As long as you complete it, it doesn’t matter how long it takes.

I’m going to put something out there, and you can take what you like and leave the rest.

I have come to believe that if, at some point, you “skipped” a phase of your life, you will eventually have to return to it and experience it. To me, that means that for those of us who “skipped” or accelerated our youth by taking on adult responsibilities and routines earlier than the average, we will still, eventually, have to experience that youth, complete with all its valuable lessons.

Many, many young adults experience what you are describing: I thought I wanted to do this, then I realized I didn’t, then I thought maybe this, maybe not, etc.

College is about learning, not just learning facts and formulas, but learning what it is you love and what it is you don’t. It’s a time of exploration, questioning, experiencing and experimenting with different identities, ideas, etc.

What would you tell your oldest son if he came to you and described the thoughts and feelings that you’ve described?

We skipped some important parts, AGK. And even though we might not regret it, or choose to have done it any differently, we still skipped it. So we’ve gotta go through it. And that’s ok – the wonderful thing is that we get to go through it with a little more wisdom and a much broader world view than the teenagers.

Your path may meander a bit, and even go in circles sometimes, but eventually you’ll find your way through the forest. And think of all the amazing things you’ll have seen and done in the meantime!

Catching up late (stupid slow connection!) but has it been 2 years already?! Man…time flies. Feels like forever sometimes, doesn’t it? Sometimes you have to move before you find your direction. I’m proud of you for sticking with it all this time and not giving up. I know how hard that is. You know I know. Just keep walking, one step at a time. You’re going to make it!
